Must-Visit Vintage Shops
You don’t have to go all the way to Queen West to find good vintage—Northumberland County has some of the best thrift-store shopping around! And if you’re visiting, it’s worth making a stop at the stores below to find that perfect item that has friends asking, “Where’d you get that?”
2 Bloomsgrove Ave.
Port Hope, Ont.
Located in a historic building that’s as unique as what you’ll find inside, Consignment Corner is the place to go if you’re looking for something one-of-a-kind. Their clothing is a refined selection of truly vintage heirloom pieces, like silk wedding dresses from the 1930s, cashmere sweaters and wool coats with bone buttons. It’s an especially good place to source kitschy home decor such as fine furniture, artwork for your gallery wall and conversation pieces (Napoleon I Carabinieri Calvary Replica Helmet, anyone?)
38 King St. W.
In 2017, Twice as Nice celebrated their 25th year of being in business in downtown Cobourg. Browsing the carefully curated racks of designer names in mint condition, it’s easy to see why this beautiful store is flourishing. You don’t have to hunt to find real gems, with items from Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Jacob Lim gracing the hangers. And here’s an insider secret: While the front of the store hosts high-end consignment, carry on to the back of the store, where you’ll find a whole room dedicated to affordable ready-to-wear that’s been previously loved, although it doesn’t look like it. They also carry a selection of new decor items for home and garden, usually seasonally themed.
11 King St. E.
Little Underground is your quintessential thrift-shop experience, complete with two rooms stuffed with beaded dresses, leather jackets, concert T-shirts, thigh-high boots and all the plaid you’ll ever need. This is the store to come to if you’re a fan of classic looks from the 1960s and ’70s; cocktail mini-dresses and psychedelic patterns abound. They also have a sprawling selection of eclectic jewellery. The store is refreshed with new fashions weekly, so treasure hunters will be rewarded for frequent trips.
41 John St., Unit L2
Port Hope, Ont.
Walking into this cozy store in Port Hope really feels like the familiar, welcoming experience that the shop’s name suggests. As you ogle the vintage jean selection, the party dresses and the shelves overflowing with chic accessories, you’ll think you really are pilfering the closet of an older sister whose personal style you’ve always envied. This is your one-stop-shop for designer handbags in perfect condition and fanciful shoes with sky-high heels. It’s worth following on Facebook just to get the heads-up on incredible end-of-season sales, when prices are slashed as much as 80 percent in order to make room for fresh inventory.
