When you walk into the professional, stylish salon and spa that is House of Attitudes, you wouldn’t have any idea that the business got its start in the back room of Amanda Harper’s family home in Cobourg. That’s when Amanda’s mom, Lisa, started taking on clients in her spare time. She soon had to hire more stylists and a receptionist and expanded into the location on Division Street where House of Attitudes stands today. Amanda, who took over ownership of the salon in 2016, grew up watching her mother work and has always felt a connection to her mom’s industry. Though she went to university for business, “every business plan I completed was based on a salon,” she admits. “Eventually it became clear that my love for the beauty industry was too strong not to pursue.”

Check out House of Attitudes’ prolific Instagram account and you’ll find plenty of astounding hair transformations. They do cuts, treatments and colour, including flawless balayage and melts. They can also style hair for special occasions like weddings, conjuring up delicately coiled plaits of braids fit for a queen. For someone with coarse, curly hair, I worried about finding a new hairstylist when I got to town, but no matter who I see at House of Attitudes, they know exactly what to do. They also sell excellent products such as Kevin Murphy and CND nail polish on site, though there’s absolutely no sales pressure.

Their services are extensive and go far beyond just hair care; in fact, they’re practically a one-stop-shop for all your beauty needs. Besides manicures, pedicures and facials, the medi-spa upstairs offers microblading, laser hair removal, and microneedling, a facial procedure that they’ve offered for years but is becoming more widely popular. House of Attitudes claims their aestheticians are “professional perfectionists,” which is exactly the sense that you get when dealing with anyone who works there—not only do they love what they do, they’re also 100% invested in being the best at it.

Amanda describes her team as “incredibly talented and devoted women who have their hearts in the right place.” She emphasizes the personal relationship clients can expect to have with the stylists and aestheticians who work there. It’s true that the vibe there is truly fun—I’ve spent appointments just eavesdropping on my stylist, Amber, chatting with another hairdresser, giggling behind my bangs. Besides leaving with fabulously healthy hair, I always walk out feeling cared for, and with a new attitude. The name, by the way, is a nod to nostalgia; when Amanda’s mom started the salon, she had a house full of moody preteens. “She really liked the name because it served two purposes, she felt it was fitting because getting a new look is all about getting a new attitude, too!” Amanda says.

Follow their Facebook and Instagram to get the low-down on all their promotions, and to ogle some gorgeous hair, of course.
