Five Romantic Spots in Northumberland County
It’s not hard to find something to do on date night in Northumberland (in fact, we had a hard time keeping this list of lovely spots to just five!). Whether it’s a walk along the waterfront or an elegant dinner by candlelight, read on for a roundup of our favourite romantic places.
Gore’s Landing Hayward Pagoda
Take a little drive to the bottom of Plank Road and walk along the dock to the Hayward Pagoda, where you and a loved one can take in the tranquility of Rice Lake. This seldom-visited spot is close to Gore’s Landing Marina and offers a great vista of the water and nearby islands. We recommend making the trip after dinner, when you’ll have a front row seat to the sunset.
795 Northumberland Heights Rd.
For the ultimate in luxury, book an escape at the Northumberland Heights spa. This retreat offers couples the chance to relax and reconnect. Rooms come with a view of the gardens and a private patio, and guests can book in-room massages before taking a stroll through the sprawling forests around the hotel. Best of all, you can finish the day with a spectacular dinner, as the on-site restaurant offers an exquisite fine dining experience.
337 Covert Hill Rd., RR #1
You don’t have to go all the way to Italy to experience the romance of a traditional Italian winery—we have one right here in Northumberland! At the restaurant, couples can enjoy rustic Italian food in a candlelit setting, accompanied by delicious wine and live music. We recommend going on a summer evening so you can enjoy your meal on the balcony with a view of the estate. Hot tip: They also do weddings!
2141 Theatre Rd. S.
Indulge in a retro ’50s date night by catching a flick at one of the few remaining drive-ins in Ontario. During the summer, the drive-in has showings every night of the week, with special triple features booked some weekends. Expect drive-in fare at the concession stand, including the Port Hope Drive-in signature offering—“Prings,” which are onion rings dressed up with gravy and cheese curds, just like poutine!
328 Presqu’ile Pkwy.
Presqu’ile Provincial Park is one of the best places to hike to really appreciate Northumberland County’s natural beauty. Soaring trees, lush greenery and vibrant bird life make for a nature-lover’s wonderland. We suggest you pack a picnic and head straight to Presqu’ile Point at the tip of the park, which offers an incredible view of Lake Ontario (you’ll know you’re there when you see the lighthouse!). For couples who are early risers, this spot is a great place to watch the sun come up; make a weekend of it and book a stay at one of the local cottages.
